2003 gmc envoy review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standard envoy is smooth, stable and responsive. introductionall-new last year, gmc envoy has become a standard for mid-size sport utilities. Envoy is smooth, stable, and responsive. It comes with a smooth, powerful inline six-cylinder that gives up nothing to the ford explorer's available v8. Envoy carries five people in comfort with two rows of seats.  envoy xl can carry seven passengers and is available with a v8 engine. Xl is a stretched, long-wheelbase version of the envoy. Its third row adds versatility. Xl lacks the response and stability of the standard envoy, however.  gmc envoy shares its chassis and engine with the chevrolet trailblazer, buick rainier, and oldsmobile bravada. Each boasts unique styling, however. Envoy has conservative, upmarket styling. Each is available in sle or slt trim. Long-wheelbase models are called envoy xl and are 16 inches longer overall to provide a third row of seats for seven-passenger capacity.  all envoys come standard with the vortec 4200, an all-new six-cylinder engine introduced for 2002. Its torque output is impressive at 275 pounds-feet. It's an excellent engine.  a 5. 3-liter overhead-valve v8 is available for envoy xl that develops 290 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. Equipped with the v8, a 2wd envoy xl can tow 7,200 pounds (7,000 pounds with 4wd).  sle 28,245) is the base trim level and includes slightly less standard equipment this year than last. Sle is still well equipped, with dual-zone air conditioning, cd stereo, anti-lock brakes, power windows and locks, keyless entry, 17-inch aluminum wheels and fog lights. The sle interior has splashes of brushed nickel on the console and instrument panel, while slt gets wood trim with nickel trim rings. Envoy xl sle 30,545) is equipped similarly.  slt 33,095) adds luxury conveniences such as leather upholstery, automatic climate control, separate rear-seat audio controls, power seats with memory, and onstar telecommunications. Slt also adds a driver information center, light-sensitive outside mirrors with turn signals, and more controls on the steering wheel. Envoy xl slt 34,895) is equipped similarly.  options include bose premium sound system, headlamp washers, rain-sensing wipers, and travelnote digital recorder. It's smaller than a gmc yukon, but much bigger than the old gmc jimmy.  envoy xl is 16 inches longer than envoy. Envoy xl is nearly 9 inches longer than a yukon, yet it's 4 inches narrower. One way to distinguish envoy xl from the standard envoy is to look at the rear doors. Envoy's rear doors are interrupted by the rear fenders. Envoy shares its platform with the chevrolet trailblazer, the upcoming buick rainier, and the outgoing oldsmobile bravada.  envoy has a wide-mouth black grille with a big ruby red logo that says gmc all the way. Sleek and clean are the distinct headlamps, round fog lights and pouty front bumper with a wide, slim slit at the very bottom. Strong beveled shapes extend along the envoy's clean sides and around the wheel wells, and help make the envoy look imposing. Envoy dispenses with the trailblazer's showy fender flares, by housing its standard 17-inch wheels inside hefty fenders that are part of the trapezoidal design theme. Under that hood is gm's newly developed inline six-cylinder engine. Advancements in electronics, metallurgy and manufacturing now enable an inline engine to soar, and gm has fully exploited this technical opportunity.  . interiorenvoy seats five passengers. Envoy xl seats seven.  where ford explorer squeezes an optional third-row seat onto a 113-inch wheelbase, envoy xl uses a 129-inch wheelbase. Envoy xl is 18 inches longer than explorer. In theory, that should mean the envoy xl is a lot roomier.  most of the envoy xl's extra length translates into increased roominess in the second row. Envoy xl provides 37. 5 inches of leg room and 58. 4 inches of hip room, versus the explorer's 35. 9 and 54. 2, respectively. Even the standard-wheelbase envoy betters the explorer in the second row, with 37. 1 inches of leg room and 58. 1 inches of hip room.  envoy xl's third row isn't roomier than the explorer's, however. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 39. 0, 45. 3, and 34. 8 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the envoy xl are 38. 5, 45. 9, and 32. 2. They claimed feeling like they were sitting in a tunnel, however.  gmc's seats seemed more comfortable to us than the chevrolet trailblazer's seats. The envoy's seat cushions are longer, wider and thicker than those in the trailblazer, and offer noticeably more side bolstering. We would choose an envoy over a trailblazer for the seats alone. Envoy slt's leather was way plush, while envoy sle's cloth was grippier. On the slt, the driver's bucket is eight-way power adjustable, with two-way lumbar support and optional heat.  instrumentation is complete and clean. A big tachometer is on the left, speedometer in center, and on the right are smaller gauges for water, battery, gas and oil. The brushed nickel trim looks classy, with or without the wood. Turning a knob is easier than sliding a switch when bouncing on rough roads. Radio buttons are non-standard and we kept changing the channel when we meant to adjust the volume, but familiarity solves this.  the center console houses an open storage bin, an enclosed compartment, and two cupholders forward of the gear lever. The emergency brake lever is also located there. There are pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats, but we'd like more places to put small items in the center console area. Behind the rear seat is a small hidden compartment under the floor, a cargo net and a power outlet.  slt's overhead console includes a sunglasses holder and an optional travelnote digital recorder, which allows the driver to orally take phone numbers while on a cell phone. Heating and air conditioning can be controlled separately by the driver, front, and rear passengers. All the systems include rds (radio data systems) technology, allowing the listener to search for stations by type, display information including song and artist information, and provide traffic and weather updates.  the onstar communications system is standard on the slt. It includes gps navigation, hands-free cell phone communication (including a free first year of safety and security service) automatic crash and theft reporting, as well as remote unlocking and other services.  rear-seat headrests conveniently flip down to give the driver a better view to the rear. Slt m. driving impressiongmc envoy is responsive and stable. The six-cylinder vortex 4200 engine is exceptional and a perfect companion for the envoy. It incorporates state-of-the-art engine construction and management, and gets 16/22 mpg city/highway mileage with 2wd. From 4. 2 liters, the inline-6 produces a dazzling 275 horsepower, 36 more than ford explorer's new 4. 6-liter sohc v8. Envoy's engine boasts a broad torque curve peaking at 275 pounds-feet, only 7 less than the ford and arriving 400 rpm sooner. About 90 percent of the peak torque is available at just 1600 rpm and it's still there at 5600 rpm. That means quick response at any engine speed, allowing the envoy to bound past trucks on steep uphill two-lanes with confidence.  with the engine's broad and bountiful torque, the transmission does dramatically less downshifting. And when the full-throttle upshift comes at about 6000 rpm the engine is only striding, not screaming. A 3. 73:1 rear-end ratio is standard, but a 4. 10 is available for better towing and a 3. 42 is available for better gas mileage. With the strong torque available, we couldn't discern a significant improvement in acceleration performance with the 4. 10. Towing was a high engineering priority, and the six-cylinder, standard-whee. 2004 gmc sierra 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Even compared to more recently introduced or re-engineered models from ford, dodge, and nissan, the sierra rides and handles very well.  new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable sierra 1500 crew cab available with 2wd or 4wd, in sle or slt trim. Built with a new 5-foot, 8-inch cargo box the new 1500 crew cab is shorter than extended-cab trucks and is designed for easier parking and maneuverability. Crew cab models offer a rear-seat dvd entertainment center as an option, making these pickups an attractive alternative to a full-size suv.  gmc sierra’s current design dates from 1999, but it was significantly refined and updated last year, with a bolder, more raked front end. Its interior was revised as well, for improved function and appearance. The brakes were upgraded, and the engines tuned to run cleaner.  these are great tow vehicles. The 2500/3500 hd models come with a 300-horsepower, 6. 0-liter v8. Carpeting and cloth seats are also standard. The w/t (work truck) package is now available on all sierra models. The w/t deletes the front-end chrome and carpeting, and substitutes vinyl seats, for a credit of $200-$700, depending on cab style.  sle trim adds a cd player, fog lamps, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Leather upholstery is optional. Slt trim, available on extended cabs and crew cabs, adds automatic air conditioning, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and onstar telecommunications.  sierra denali, the flagship of the fleet, is an extended-cab, short-bed 4x4. Denali packs a 325-horsepower version of the 6. 0-liter v8, along with automatic transmission and an exclusive, sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system. Denali comes with onstar, tone-on-tone leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, extra sound deadening, a bose audio system with separate controls for rear-seat passengers, a unique console and other exclusive amenities. It's equipped with steering wheel controls for the audio system, onstar, trip computer, and other programmable functions. Quadrasteer comes packaged with a limited-slip differential and a trailer-tow package. walkaroundthe front styling of the gmc sierra ties it closely to the mid-size gmc envoy, and to some of the great gmc pickups of the past. The chrome-framed grille consists of three black horizontal bars that prominently display a big red gmc emblem. Chromed front bumpers include two airflow cutouts. Up-level models have a body-colored lower front fascia; base models have a light-charcoal fascia.  compared with the chevy silverado, gmc’s styling is more conservative, more mature, with smoother, more sophisticated lines. An optional grille/brush guard adds front-end protection. A single onstar roof antenna combines the gps and cell-phone functions.  the load height (the distance from the ground to the bed) for 2wd sierra models is just 31. 6 inches. For 4wd models, it's 33. 7 inches.  all gmc sierras are built on the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever produced. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape relatively large steel components. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness. interiorthe gmc sierra cab remains among the roomiest in the industry, with large door openings to aid entry and exit. The interior was extensively redesigned for 2003.  the seats are big and cushy. Other pickup owners find the gm seats more to their liking. Also, the interior door handles are ropey and awkward.  the instrument cluster features highly legible gauges with white backlighting and orange pointers. The denali’s gauges feature blue backlighting and white pointers. A driver information center reports on as many as 27 vehicle functions with an easy-to-read, single-line lcd display. A compass is incorporated into the overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items.  audio and climate controls, which were introduced for 2003, are sophisticated, yet easy to operate. The system comes with am, fm1, fm2, xm1, and xm2 bands. Optional audio controls on the steering wheel make it easy to switch among station presets and modes. It includes a storage compartment and a 12-volt power outlet at the rear. (all sierras come with three 12-volt power outlets at the bottom center of the dash.) vents and hvac controls for rear-seat passengers are mounted on the rear of the center console on crew cabs and extended cabs.  extended-cab models offer surprisingly good back seat accommodations. Climb through the reverse-opening rear door and find a seat that’s reasonably comfortable. Rear-seat passengers get their own air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be loosened from the floor with a wrench and removed through one of the side doors. Not exactly quick release, but a useful feature.  the rear seats in the crew cab models are as roomy as the second-row of seats in a suburban. With optional leather, a crew cab feels truly luxurious. Rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down, providing a large protected cargo area inside the cab.  a panasonic dvd system 995) is available for the 1500 crew cab, turning it into a real family vehicle. The system comes with a seven-inch flip-down screen for watching dvd movies and cartoons, a cd player, two sets of wireless headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs.  safety is enhanced with dual-stage airbags (1500 only), which deploy with less force in less-severe collisions. An automatic passenger-sensing system assesses whether the occupant in the seat is an adult or child, based on weight and seat belt tension, and deactivates the passenger-side air bag accordingly. An indicator light in the rearview mirror lets the driver know when the airbag is deactivated. Three-point seat belts are provided in all first and second-row seat positions. driving impressionno question, gmc sierra represents a great line of full-size pickups. On the road, the sierra is quiet and well behaved, more so than other full-size pickups. It's stable at high speeds, particularly the longer wheelbase (143. 5-inch) models. It rides well and handles well.  the 5300 v8 makes for an enjoyable engine around town and on the interstate. The 5. 3-liter (327-cubic-inch) engine is rated 295 horsepower with 330 pounds-feet of torque, plenty for light towing and hauling. With 285 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet, the 4. 8-liter. This engine is rated at 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque.  a 3. 0-liter v6 is optional rated at 264 hp and 222 lb-ft of torque and 17/24 mpg with front-wheel drive and 6-speed automatic. The v6 is rated to tow up to 3500 pounds, enough for a light boat or a pair of personal watercraft or snowmobiles.  all-wheel drive is available for all-weather capability. All models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission.  we found the interior of the gmc terrain comfortable and quiet, well isolated from the noise and chop of the roadway. Terrain sle awd 26,000) adds all-wheel drive.  terrain slt 27,850) upgrades with leather upholstery, automatic air conditioning, heated front seats, eight-way adjustable driver's seat, pioneer audio with eight speakers, amplifier and subwoofer, bluetooth, remote start ignition, 18-inch machined aluminum wheels with p235/60r18 all-season tires, color-keyed roof rack. Terrain slt awd 29,600) features all-wheel drive.  optional am/fm with navigation 2,145) adds dvd navigation with seven-inch touch-screen display, voice recognition, hard drive, and eight-speaker pioneer audio. Rear-seat entertainment 1,295) includes dual displays, two wireless headsets, remote control, auxiliary jack, usb port, am/fm/cd/mp3/wma, dvd playback, pioneer eight-speaker audio. Gmc is strictly a truck company, so the terrain has bolder styling with a larger, more distinctive grille.  the gmc body makes use of broad, sheer surfaces with rectangular shapes in the wheelwells. The side surfaces are clean, with chrome accents on the door handles and windows. Along the bottom of the exterior panels is a textured anti-chip layer of paint, conveying the message that the terrain could be functional in harsher environments, both urban and rural. A sleek roof rack provides additional cargo capacity.  especially when viewed from the front, the terrain's wide stance and high beltline make for a substantial, well-planted impression. Although technically a compact, the terrain looks much bigger.  three wheel sizes and styles are available, including 17- and 18-inch aluminum wheels, and 19-inch chrome clad wheels. interiorgmc terrain seats five, and it is not available with a third-row seat. The larger gmc acadia is better for families who might need to seat seven or eight.  the interior design of the gmc terrain features curving lines and close-fitting panels with nicely grained textures. The environment inside the terrain is open and relaxed. We were told that the interior team worked extensively to optimize the accelerator pedal heal position, so that the driving position could be close to ideal for a wider range of body types. There was special attention paid to accommodating shorter drivers.  the controls and dash are low and lean away from the front occupants, an effect that creates a generously open, spacious feeling. The dash and controls are lighted in orange, with bright white instrument numerals. The interior lighting scheme is extensively developed, creating a well-lit, but not overly bright, nighttime environment.  a floating center stack, positioned so that the most-used controls are within easy reach, houses a center storage bin big enough for a laptop computer. The navigation screen is seven inches in size, with touch-screen design. A 10-gigabyte hard drive enables storage of a substantial number of music files.  the rear seat is designed with emphasis on flexible operation. It reclines and slides forward eight inches to favor either cargo room or passenger room, as the situation dictates. The optional rear-seat entertainment system has two independently operable screens, capable of providing separate amusements for two back seat occupants.  a rearview camera is standard in all models, a great safety feature as it can help the driver spot a child behind the vehicle when backing up. However, without the navigation system, the image is displayed on the rearview mirror and it's small. Having the navigation system makes the rearview camera easier to use. Regardless, this image can help the driver spot a small child when backing up.  onstar and xm are pre-paid for one year. Gmc engineers have used acoustic blankets between the engine and dash to reduce engine noise, and acoustic laminated glass to deflect wind noise. The doors are triple-sealed for further quieting and efficient climate control. driving impressionthe gmc terrain feels substantial around town, but reasonably agile, with a progressive turn-in and minimal body roll at normal speeds. The chassis is clearly set up to deliver a smooth, isolated ride, as we discovered on some straight, fast and sometimes potholed midwestern roads. Relatively little vibration leaks through into the steering wheel or other touch points. The suspension is on the soft side, but handling around town and on more demanding roads is not hugely affected by body roll or brake dive. Hydraulic bushings were used to tune the chassis. Cornering is quite predictable and secure, enhanced by a relatively wide stance. It's not going to win an autocross, but the terrain is still solidly planted and nicely balanced.  the 3. 0-liter v6 is an advanced, direct-injection engine that revs smoothly and willingly. The same engine is used in the buick lacrosse, but this is a higher-output version that has more aggressive induction and exhaust turning. The 3. 0-liter v6 is rated at 264 hp and 222 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is an epa-estimated 17/25 mpg with front-wheel drive, 16/22 mpg with all-wheel drive. The terrain v6 is rated to tow up to 3500 pounds.  for an engine that supplies peak torque fairly high in the rev range, the v6 pulls from low rpm smoothly and well, capably powering the nearly 4000-pound terrain around town in a satisfying, low-effort manner. It's the 6-speed transmission that makes the engine ideal, with a gear for every situation and intelligent programming that can sense the difference between subtle variations of throttle input. Sixth gear is a very tall overdrive, so the terrain cruises at highway speeds easily and quietly, loafing along at 1500 rpm at 60 mph, and 1800 at 75 mph. And yet, the transmission and v6 allow the terrain to respond well to demand for power on on-ramps and highway passing. Ask it to pass and it downshifts twice in quick succession, but with very little shift shock, and the tach shows 4500 rpm on the way to a 6950-rpm redline. In fact, we did not notice a huge difference in acceleration performance. Towing capacity is reduced to 1500 p.

2008 gmc sierra 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Upgraded for 2008. introductionthe gmc sierra was redesigned from the ground up last year, using proven powertrains, so the 2008 model year brings minor refinements, a few additions, and a special all-terrain model.  the sierra is built on a stiff platform for a smooth ride and sharp handling. The gmc sierra shares platforms with the chevy silverado but its exterior styling is quite different. Sierra interiors offer a choice of two dashboard styles.  the 2008 gmc sierra is offered in a denali version, which makes for a comfortable, luxurious, pickup with the emphasis on performance rather than payload and towing capacity. It can be equipped with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or a long bed (8-foot), two bucket seats or a three-person bench seat, v6 or v8.  the extended cab has two rows of seats with rear-hinged rear access doors that open 170 degrees and have roll-down windows. The extended cab can be equipped with either a short bed (5-foot, 8-inch), standard or long bed. The crew cab can be equipped with seating for five or six and comes with the short bed.  standard equipment on the work truck 17,070) includes vinyl seating surfaces, air conditioning, am/fm/xm radio, one-year of onstar, daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring system, smooth ride suspension, 17-inch wheels, chrome bumpers.  the sle 24,690) adds a cd player, cruise control, cloth seats, a rear-window defogger, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and outside temperatures, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lamps, handling/trailering suspension, carpeting and power door locks/windows/mirrors. To this, sle2 28,465) adds premium cloth seats, dual-zone air conditioning, a floor console, six-way power driver and front passenger seats, audio controls on the steering wheel, and machined aluminum wheels.  the slt 30,860) adds leather seat trim, a unique instrument panel, six-disc cd changer with bose sound system, heated windshield washers, front bucket seats with 12-way power adjustment and heat, and polished aluminum wheels; crew cab models also get a rear-seat audio system.  the denali 38,095) includes a top-flight interior with leather, heated and powered front seats, unique woodgrain console, side curtain airbags, dual-zone climate control, park assist and so on. Denali options include a heated steering wheel, sunroof, and rear-seat entertainment. Denali comes only as a crew cab with a 403-hp 6. 2-liter v8 engine, six-speed automatic transmission and rear or all-wheel drive.  the all terrain model, available as a late-2008 model, features the z71 off-road package, heavy-duty trailer package, 18-inch wheels, rancho shocks, and myriad cosmetic enhancements. When ordered with slt trim, exclusive two-tone leather is used. All terrain is available as an extended cab standard box or crew cab, 2wd or 4wd with 5. 3-liter or 6-liter engine.  options for the seirra include head curtain airbags, a locking rear differential, stabilitrak, towing and trailering equipment, and a power sunroof.  safety features include dual front airbags and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Optional head curtain airbags automatically inflate when sensors sense a severe impact to provide extra protection in the event of a rollover or secondary collision. Also available: driver and front-seat passenger side-impact air bags; anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrac active transfer case, ultrasonic rear park assist, onstar emergency notification. walkaroundthe front-end design of the 2008 gmc sierra emphasizes the truck's wide stance. The gmc emblem is set amid dark horizontal bars in the middle of an upright and chrome-surrounded grille. The headlamps are a pair of stacked, jeweled lenses. The front bumper features round fog lamps and a wide air intake and wraps around the sides of the truck to the front lower edge of the front wheel wells.  the denali gets its own chromed grilles, both the upper section and the air vent below the front bumper, and the bumpers are painted to match.  the hood has a pair of long, narrow v-shaped power bulges and leads back to a steeply raked windshield. The windshield is tilted back for improved aerodynamics and enhanced highway fuel economy.  the side view features slightly bulging and elongated fender flares that sweep down behind the headlamps. The sides of the cargo bed are higher than on previous models, and the exterior of the tailgate is sculpted, enhancing the rear view of the truck. Stacked tail lamps are on either side of the tailgate.  two new reds are available on a truck that looks taller and stronger than its predecessor, yet also has improved aerodynamics. Except for denali, epa ratings run 13-15 city, 17-20 highway, and on e85 those numbers drop substantially.  an optional cargo management system is available for the bed with side rails and various cargo-carrying and cargo-controlling boxes and dividers and tie-downs.  the gmc sierra and chevy silverado are built on the gmt900 platform that debuted in 2007 and shares many underpinnings with the yukon suv. The pickups get a unique rear suspension and frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. The sierra and silverado share mechanical components, with the exception of the unique features found on the sierra denali.  compared with the previous-generation, the current frame is 234 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. This yields a smoother ride and better handling. It also allowed the engineers to reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment as well as the gaps between fenders and bumpers, all of which enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.  the front suspension uses a coil-over-shock setup and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe gmc sierra slt boasts interior features popularized by the yukon sport utility, providing a much more upscale environment for the driver and passengers. Gmc hasn't forgotten about owners who use their trucks for work, however. So other sierra models use a pure pickup interior with more function, like dual glove boxes, and less luxury.  the 'pure pickup,' as it's called, has a unique dashboard that is more driver-oriented and has larger switchgear and door handles that are designed to be easily manipulated by those wearing work gloves. The pure pickup interior includes a 40/20/40 split front bench seat with the center section folding down to provide a large storage compartment and wide armrest.  the suv-style luxury-oriented interior puts audio and ventilation system controls more easily within reach of the front-seat passenger and has two front bucket seats with a fixed center console with assorted storage compartments.  either dashboard sports full analog instrumentation, and many have more info available through digital display. Operating controls are gm simple, especially on the pure pickup, while the top-line models central dash has many small white-on-black buttons that may require a short learning curve. Some drivers report peculiar ergonomic details as the steering wheel is slightly offset from the seat centerline.  rear seating is provided for three people in the extended and crew cab versions, with 34. 3 inches of rear legroom in the extended cab and 38. 7 in the crew cab, space is similar to ford's f-150 and nissan's titan, and smaller than dodge's quad and mega cabs and tundra's double and crewmax cabs. The crew cab rear seat is split 60/40 and can folded up individually for a flat load floor; this arrangement is optional on extended cabs.  access to the rear seating area of the extended cab is eased by rear-hinged doors that open to nearly flush with the bed sides. Sitting in the back seat of the extended cab is made more pleasant thanks to the fact that the windows in the rear access doors power fully down. driving impressionwe've driven multiple versions of the new gmc sierra and found all of them to be comfortable.  the 5. 3-liter v8 provided plenty of power for the extended cab sle models we drove and the 6. 0-liter v8 was more than enough for the slt crew cab we checked out. All engines need to be revved up (by truck standards) for best grunt. Generally the sierra models match competitors for smoothness, though by benefit of their five-speed automatics the ram 4. 7 typically runs with gm's 5. 3, the ram 5. 7 and titan 5. 6 compete with the gm 6. 0, while tundra's 5. 7 and six-speed auto performance can be matched only by the denali's 6. 2 and six-speed auto.  of the suspensions, the z83 is claimed the smoothest ride while the z85 is slightly stiffer and for those who often tow.
